"Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the digestive system. It causes symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These tend to come and go over time, and can last for days, weeks or months at a time." - nhs.UK
IBS affects 1 in 5 people in the UK at some time during their life. Symptoms vary and can range from mild and uncomfortable to severely debilitating to the point where they impair quality of life. As a result, sufferers of IBS may also become anxious or depressed, the symptoms of which can, in turn, make IBS symptoms worse or last longer.
Thanks to the pioneering research of Peter Whorwell, Professor of Medicine & Gastroenterology at the University of Manchester, it has been demonstrated since the 1980s that over 60% of IBS sufferers who undertake hypnotherapy see long-term improvement and even the complete disappearance of symptoms, often with no recurrence. Later clinical studies into hypnotherapy for IBS have shown long-term success rates of 75 to 90%.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines now recommend Hypnotherapy for management of IBS in adults.
