Fertility Support

Hypnotherapy for Fertility Support

"Infertility is when a couple cannot get pregnant (conceive) despite having regular unprotected sex. Around 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving." - nhs.UK

Hypnotherapy for Fertility

Most people can get pregnant naturally within a year or two, but for some it’s not that easy. Infertility rates in the UK are rising and around 1 in 7 heterosexual couples will have difficulty or be unable to conceive.

Your doctor will be able to help you explore appropriate medical options for any physical issues. However, for about a quarter of all couples who experience difficulty with fertility there is no known physical cause.

Wherever you are in your fertility journey, care of psychological health is just as important as physical health but can often be overlooked in a purely medical approach. There is growing evidence that stress, anxiety or depression can be major factors in this journey (for both partners).

Hypnotherapy is very effective in relief of stress, anxiety and depression.

Also, lifestyle is known to impact our ability to conceive and when we’re less stressed we are able to make better decisions about our lifestyle too.

"Women with depression, when treated showed a 60% viable pregnancy rate within six months, contrasting with 24% when depression went untreated."    Journal of American Medical Women’s Association, 1999, vol 54

How can Hypnotherapy help?

  • Reducing anxiety & stress
  • Reducing depression
  • Increasing feelings of calm and relaxation
  • Restoring physical, mental and emotional balance and wellbeing allowing nature, or fertility treatment, the best chance to take its course most effectively
  • Helping you make any lifestyle changes that are advised
  • Give you tools to cope with the anxiety and emotions associated with fertility treatment
  • The Impact of Stress on Fertility

Stress and anxiety  cause changes in our biochemistry and rhythms of the body.

Prolonged stress or anxiety can impact and disrupt the production of hormones necessary for ovulation, implantation and sperm quality.

Our body and mind perceive stress as a warning of imminent threat or danger, so to prioritise our safety they suppress any function that would cause us unnecessary strain, such as reproduction or taking care of a foetus.

Prolonged or excessive stress can lead to:

    • lack of ovulation (anovulation)
    • rregular/absent menstrual cycles

Our body's stress response causes an increase in adrenalin. This reduces the amount of progesterone produced. Progesterone is key to creation and health of the lining of the uterus which in turn is vital to fertility and pregnancy.

Stress increases  the amount of prolactin in the body which inhibits conception.

After prolonged stress the sympathetic nervous system can become hyper-stimulated. A hyper-stimulated nervous system sends less blood to the uterus and ovaries, thereby impairing their optimal functioning (Lewis 2004).

Anxiety and stress impair sleep which will not only impact us physically and mentally but may take a toll on relationships too. For as long as our sleep is impaired, and for some time after, our stress response remains active.

"Poor sleep effects our physical health – like water from a burst pipe in your home, the effects of sleep deprivation will seep into every nook and cranny of biology, down into your cells, even altering your most fundamental self – your DNA."  - Prof Matthew Walker

Lack of sleep increases our risk of disease and conditions that can negatively impact fertility e.g. diabetes, obeisity, cardiovascular disease etc.

  • The Impact of Lifestyle on Fertility

A healthy lifestyle needs balance for our health and wellbeing. This includes, but isn't limited to, a healthy work/life balance. We need to think about how best to increase beneficial activities and habits while reducing those that are damaging or deterimental.

The following lifestyle changes will have a positive effect on fertility:

    • Stop smoking:  Women who smoke are 50% more likely to miscarry. Men who smoke have a lower sperm count and a 20% decrease in sperm motility.
    • Stop drinking alcohol: alcohol (even a moderate intake) may affect fertility and sperm quality.
    • Don't do drugs: cocaine can disrupt the menstrual cycle and affect the placenta. Marijuana lowers testosterone levels & sperm count, and decreases sperm motility.
    • Reduce caffeine intake: caffeine increases the chances of miscarriage
    • Avoid saunas: anything that raises the temperature of a man’s testicles can decrease sperm production and motility.
    • Exercise gently: research has suggested that strenuous exercise (causing the heart rate to increase over 110 beats per minute) may decrease chances of conception. (Domar and Kelly,  2002, p271)

Talking therapies are immensely effective in reducing anxiety and giving you the tools to cope in stressful situations.

Solution focused hypnotherapy can also help couples who have experienced trauma, disappointment or loss in the past to come to terms with their experience and break down internal emotional barriers in their own time and in their own way, without the need to discuss painful memories.

As a talking therapy, solution focused hypnotherapy is one of the most powerful and effective available. Hypnotherapy cannot guarantee success but can help you optimise the likelihood of conception, give you support and the tools to cope, wherever your journey takes you.
